To apply for a Portuguese Electronic Passport - commonly abbreviated as PEP - you must be the holder of a VALID and updated Portuguese Citizen Card or ID Card. This also applies to minors and small children. No other identification document can be accepted for this purpose. If you don’t have a valid identification document, you must first apply for a Citizen Card.
Only Portuguese nationals can apply for a Passport.
To apply for passport you must come in person to the Consulate General. Biometric data such as fingerprints, picture and signature will be collected.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO BRING PAPER PICTURES.
Minors must be accompanied by at least one of the parents or legal guardian. The parent that is not present must provide:
- A signed declaration to authorize the issuance of a travel document to the minor;
- A copy of the Citizen Card for Portuguese parents or of the Canadian Driver’s License for non-Portuguese parents.
Bring your current passport, even if expired.

Due to a high volume of service and limited resources, we highly recommend that you contact us in a in a timely manner. This is particularly true when applying for Citizen Cards and Passports.
Be aware that all documents are issued in Portugal.
The Consulate General cannot be held responsible neither for issuance or delivery delays, nor for altered travel plans made prior to obtaining the proper identification and / or travel document.
